REAL IDEAS ORGANISATION, CALLED UPON ORACLE DESIGN FOR THE SECOND TIME. WE WORKED IN HAYLE COMMUNITY SCHOOL TO DESIGN A NEW LOGO FOR THEIR NEW INTEGRATED HEALTH CENTRE. OUR DIRECTOR, ANDREW STONE, TAUGHT 450 CHILDREN IN 3 DAYS THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND LOGO DESIGN.

CLIENT

Real Ideas Organisation based in Bristol, Plymouth and Truro asked us to collaborate with them
for a second time this year in a new scheme across the south west to include integrated
health centers on school's. The school in question for which I would be working with is
Hayle Community School, based in Cornwall.

The project, which is being run through a partnership between The Duchy Health Charity, The
Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health, the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust
and Cornwall’s Children’s Services Authority, involves creating School based Integrated Health
Centre at Hayle school. This scheme is also being run at Penair School and Budehaven School.

The aim of the project is to deliver confidential support and advice to young people in their own
schools in a
way which will encourage them to take responsibility for their own health needs.
They will see health and education professionals working together to provide a range of health
services to complement pupils’ education and promote a healthy lifestyle. The services at each
Centre are being developed to meet local need and in consultation with students, parents,
governors and local communities.

These could include diet, exercise and healthy eating, support for depression and other mental
health problems, self esteem support, smoking, exam stress workshops, alcohol and drug
abuse and sexual health.

OBJECTIVE

Oracle Design's Director, Andrew Stone, was asked to deliver 9 separate workshops over 3
days. This would be to teach 450 children at the school the basics of Graphic Design and also
logo design. From this, there would need to be a final logo designed from the ideas in which the
children came up with.

Also working on the project would be a photographer called Dodie Bridges and a sculptor/3D
artist, Ben Cook. The aim was for all 3 professional practitioners to work together to create a
logo, 3D piece and photography for the centre.

Late in 2010, there was a call for developing the design further and taking the children down a
more professional approach, so to scrap the cartoon image we had created in the first sessions
and design something very different and in our opinion, something that looks great.

SOLUTION

Andrew, our Director, worked with the children to initially teach them the design principles, but
then to let them all sketch ideas and develop what they thought the logo for the Crayon Health
Centre should be. Each student was then asked to choose their favorite design they had
created and to finalise and then 'pitch' this to the class. After each session the children would
vote on the best logo for their class. Years 7, 8 and 9 all followed the same principal and
eventually 3 days and 450 children later, we had 9 chosen logos for 'Crayon'.

After the second session in late 2010, the new logo was finished and the school decided upon
two different ideas, one that can be used for the children and one that can be used for the
adults, results of which can be seen above.

In 2011, the new designs will begin to be implimented to the various print material, signage and
promotion. We will have more updates and imagery once this is complete.

TESTIMONIAL:

"We worked with Oracle Design on a project where the ideas came from a class of primary school
children. Oracle Design worked really well with the pupils, who enjoyed the sessions greatly and
the finished products were excellent."
